Morocco Ranked Safest Country in Africa and 42nd Worldwide for Travel in 2026

The Kingdom scores 73.25 out of 100 on the HelloSafe Global Safety Index, outperforming several European and Latin American destinations.

The 2026 edition of the HelloSafe Global Safety Index — a travel data and insurance comparison platform based in Europe — has placed Morocco at 42nd globally among the 50 safest countries for travellers, with a score of 73.25 out of 100. More notably, Morocco came in first across the entire African continent, ahead of Tunisia which scored 72.9 points.

The index draws on public data from international bodies including the United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, and the International Telecommunication Union. It evaluates countries across five dimensions: public safety and crime rates, political and social stability, health security, cybersecurity, and environmental resilience.

First in Africa: What the Ranking Shows

Only two African countries made it into the global top 50: Morocco at 42nd and Tunisia at 43rd. The rest of the continent remains held back by structural gaps in healthcare infrastructure, road safety, and political stability, according to the index methodology.

Morocco’s lead in Africa reflects a combination of factors: relative political stability, ongoing investment in public infrastructure, and a security apparatus that has drawn recognition from international partners. None of this makes the country perfect — but in comparative terms, the data puts it clearly ahead on the continent.

How Morocco Compares Globally

Morocco’s 42nd-place finish puts it in close company with destinations that have well-established tourism industries. Costa Rica sits at 39th, Chile at 40th, and Uruguay at 41st. Meanwhile, Morocco scores higher than Turkey (46th), Malaysia (48th), Romania (49th), and Bulgaria (50th) — all of which are popular travel destinations in their own right.

For a North African country to sit comfortably alongside Latin American and Southern European destinations in a global safety ranking is worth noting. It suggests that Morocco’s long-term investment in security and tourism infrastructure is showing up in the data.

How the Index Works: Five Pillars of Safety

The 2026 edition goes beyond traditional crime-based safety measures. It incorporates cyber risk and climate vulnerability alongside more conventional indicators. All data comes from publicly available international sources, which the platform says is a deliberate shift from earlier editions that relied partly on proprietary datasets.

The Five Pillars and Their Weights

Public Safety & Crime (35%): Covers homicide rates, theft, and urban safety perception. Sources include UNODC, Our World in Data, and Numbeo.

Political & Social Stability (25%): Measures governance quality, rule of law, and corruption control using World Bank WGI indicators and Transparency International data.

Health Security (15%): Factors in healthy life expectancy, road mortality rates, and healthcare system quality based on WHO data.

Cybersecurity (15%): Evaluates digital protection levels using the ITU Global Cybersecurity Index.

Environmental Risk & Climate Resilience (10%): Assesses exposure to natural disasters and climate adaptation capacity via the ND-GAIN Index from the University of Notre Dame.

What This Means for Travellers Considering Morocco

Rankings like this one carry weight with travellers who research destinations before booking. A top-50 placement — and first in Africa — gives Morocco a credible data point to reference in tourism marketing and media coverage. It won’t replace on-the-ground experience, but it does offer reassurance for first-time visitors weighing their options.

The timing matters too. Morocco is gearing up for major international sporting events in the coming years, and a strong showing on safety indices helps reinforce the country’s pitch as a reliable, well-connected destination that offers cultural depth without compromising on security.

Key Changes in the 2026 Index

HelloSafe made several methodological updates this year. The index now relies entirely on public datasets — no proprietary sources. The cybersecurity pillar was strengthened with the latest ITU data. Climate resilience metrics from ND-GAIN were added for the first time. And the environmental risk weighting was increased to 10%, reflecting the growing impact of climate-related disruptions on travel patterns worldwide.
